Tiek Lietuvoje yra miestų, kuriuose gyvena daugiau kaip 3000 gyventojų. Trys didžiausi – Vilnius, Kaunas ir Klaipėda. Juose gyvena beveik 1 mln. gyventojų. Pirmieji miestai pradėjo atsirasti maždaug X amžiuje, kai šalia pilių ėmė kurtis amatininkai ir prekybininkai. Sostinės Vilniaus gimtadieniu laikomi 1323 metai, tada jis pirmą kartą paminėtas kunigaikščio Gedimino laiške, kviečiančiame atvykti čia gyventi amatininkus.

The first cities in Lithuania were founded in the 10th century, when artisans and merchants settled around castles. The birthday of our capital, Vilnius, is considered to be 1323, as this is the year in which the city was first mentioned, in letters sent by Grand Duke Gediminas inviting artisans to come and live there.
